The Greek word for “gifts” is the word “charisma” [khar'-is-mah], which means “a gift of divine grace; grace or gifts denoting extraordinary powers; freely and graciously given by God.” These gifts that 1 Corinthians 12 speaks of are freely given to you by God, your loving Father. |

“The Gifts of the Holy Spirit are Gracious endowments, leading to miraculous results.” 1 1 Commentary on 1 Corinthians 12:4, www.Bible.cc scroll down the page to "Clarke's Commentary on the Bible", Adam Clarke, British Methodist Theologian, 1762-1832 |
One important thing about the Charismatic Renewal is that it embraces the belief that the Holy Spirit still gives these gifts to manifest His presence and power. Many Christians feel the gifts were given only in the early days of the New Testament, to help the apostles accomplish their important work of establishing the Church. They do not believe, however, that these gifts are still in existence or necessary today. Can we look at the present situation and feel that the Gifts of the Holy Spirit are not needed? We live in a world where sin and immorality are acceptable, where the teaching and divinity of Jesus are constantly being rejected even by some churches and where Christians are persecuted for their faith. It seems far more appropriate to thank God that He continues to grant the charismatic gifts to those who desire to serve Him, the Church, the body of Christ and the entire world. He is still empowering those who love Him to accomplish tasks which are far beyond their human powers and abilities. 2 2 “Understanding the Gifts of the Holy Spirit,”www.DPSRFD.org scroll down to the final few lines of the page, Catholic Charismatic Renewal Services Diocese of Rockford, Illinois |
“The apostle declares, ‘We speak wisdom among those who are perfect’ [ 1 Cor 2:6 ]. He terms those perfect who have received the Spirit of God, and who through the Spirit speak in all languages, as he himself used to speak. Similarly, we also hear many brothers in the Church who possess prophetic gifts and who through the Spirit speak all kinds of languages. They bring to light the hidden things of men for the general benefit and declare the mysteries of God. These the apostle terms spiritual. They are spiritual because they partake of the Spirit, not because their flesh is stripped off and taken away and they have become purely spiritual [as the Gnostics teach]. (Against Heresies V:6:1) 3 3 Quote on the Gifts of the Holy Spirit, www.Christian-History.org, Saint Irenaeus, 2nd Century AD – c. 202 |
“Spurgeon exercised the gift of prophecy. He did not label it as such, but that does not alter the reality of what the Holy Spirit accomplished through him. If one were to examine Spurgeon’s theology and ministry, as well as recorded accounts of it by his contemporaries as well as subsequent biographers, most would conclude from the absence of explicit reference to miraculous charismata such as prophecy and the word of knowledge that such gifts had been withdrawn from church life. But Spurgeon’s own testimony inadvertently says otherwise!” 4 4 “Gifts in Church History,” www.EnjoyingGodMinistries.com section 4, final paragraph, Sam Storms’ quote on Charles Haddon Spurgeon |
1 Corinthians 14:1-4 EAGERLY PURSUE and seek to acquire [this] love [make it your aim, your great quest]; and earnestly desire and cultivate the spiritual endowments (gifts), especially that you may prophesy (interpret the divine will and purpose in inspired preaching and teaching). For one who speaks in an [unknown] tongue speaks not to men but to God, for no one understands or catches his meaning, because in the [Holy] Spirit he utters secret truths and hidden things [not obvious to the understanding]. But [on the other hand], the one who prophesies [who interprets the divine will and purpose in inspired preaching and teaching] speaks to men for their up-building and constructive spiritual progress and encouragement and consolation. He who speaks in a [strange] tongue edifies and improves himself, but he who prophesies [interpreting the divine will and purpose and teaching with inspiration] edifies and improves the church and promotes growth [in Christian wisdom, piety, holiness, and happiness]. 5 5 1 Corinthians 14:1-4, The Amplified Bible Read the Amplified Bible in context |
1 Corinthians 14:1-5 Be constantly pursuing this love, earnestly endeavoring to acquire it. Moreover, be earnestly desiring the spiritual gifts, and do this in order that you might more efficiently impart to others the divine revelations you have received. For the one who is uttering words in a tongue [a language not understood except through an interpreter] is not speaking to men but to God, for no one hears him so as to understand what he is saying. And he utters with his human spirit [as energized by the Holy Spirit] divine revelations not explained. But he who imparts divine revelations to men is speaking with the result of up building the Christian life, and exhortation, and consolation. The one who utters words in a tongue builds himself up in his Christian life. But he who imparts divine revelations to others builds up the local assembly. Now I desire that all of you be speaking in tongues, but I prefer that you impart divine revelations to others which you have received. Moreover, greater is the one who imparts divine revelations to others than he who speaks in tongues, with this exception—that he interpret, in order that the local assembly might receive up building.
